LG Q8 has a 6.2-inch display, stylus, and a recycled name

LG Q8 has a 6.2-inch display, stylus, and a recycled name

Names of any product, let alone a smartphone, can turn it into a laughing stock or become trendy and launch it into popularity. Some companies hire marketing teams to come up with these product names and build an entire advertising campaign around it. Then we have companies like LG, which seems to be throwing darts at a dartboard just to come up with the LG G7 ThinkQ. So late last night LG launched a new smartphone in South Korea and instead of thinking of a new name for it, they decided to use one from last year, the LG Q8.

Last year’s LG Q8 was marketed as a smaller version of their popular LG V20. I’m always a fan of this because there is definitely a space within the community for people who don’t love the larger displays and want something a little more compact. Many would assume the next Q device would be complementary to the upcoming LG V40 or at least the LG V30, LG V35 ThinQ, or the LG V30S ThinQ. However, it seems that LG doesn’t regard building reputations around phone names to be a big deal at all.

So now the 2018 version of the LG Q8 has been released and it’s nothing like the previous LG Q8. Instead, it looks to be their way to compete with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 9 due to its large 6.2-inch display and stylus. When we look closer at the new LG G8, we can see it is a virtual copy of the LG Q Stylus that the company released just two months ago.

For those who may have missed the LG Q Stylus, here are the specs of the phone which have been rebranded into the new LG Q8.

Specs LG Q8
Display 6.2-inch 18:9 FHD+ FullVision Display (2160 x 1080 / 389ppi)
Chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 450
RAM 4GB
Internal Storage 64GB
Extras LG Stylus
Water Resistance IP68 rating
Color Choices Aurora Black and Moroccan Blue.
Pricing 539,000 Korean won, (~$478)

There were some details that were not revealed in reports from those at the launch event just yet. This includes the battery capacity, the existence of the 3.5mm headphone port, or a slot for a micoSD card. We could look back at the LG Q Stylus that the company released earlier this year and assume those details will be a 3,300mAh battery, a 3.5mm port included, and there will be a microSD card slot. Now, if only it had a better name.
